The Church of Our Lady of health or Gospoja

Description

The votive church was built by the people of Vrbnik in 1859 on the site of the former St. Peter's Church from the 14th century, following a cholera epidemic in which 79 people died. It was erected during the time of priest Nikola Gršković and the Bishop of Krk, Ivan Josip Vitezić.

On the altar is a statue of the Virgin Mary with Child, adorned with a gilded silver crown, surrounded by statues of St. Peter and St. Roch, as well as St. Fabian and St. Sebastian, the patrons against infectious diseases. Above the entrance is a stained glass window donated by Dr. Dinko Vitezić in 1888, and a large bell acquired in 1923.

In the church, Marian feasts and devotions are celebrated, and it is one of the stops for folk processions held on Olive Sunday, Corpus Christi, and St. Roch's Day.

This is a beloved church for the people of Vrbnik, who enjoy celebrating various anniversaries there, and recently, many couples have chosen it for the sacrament of marriage. The romantic setting on the cliff with a view of the old town surrounded by walls and the Velebit Channel, along with the small park Gospoja and the proximity of hotels, certainly contributes to this.

In the park named Gospoja, after the popular name for this church, there is a statue of Blaž Baromić, the first known Croatian Glagolitic printer, turned away from Senj, where he opened his Glagolitic printing house in 1494.
