Chapel of St. Martin

Description

The Chapel of St. Martin is located on the street leading to the Square of the Vrbnik Statute, near the former city gate that once led through the walls surrounding Vrbnik.

It was built and furnished by the priest Martin Vitezić in 1561, as attested by a Glagolitic inscription.

Over the centuries, the chapel fell into ruin, but it was restored in 1891 by Dinko Vitezić, a doctor of law and a member of the Viennese parliament, who was later buried there in 1904. Vitezić's friend, the renowned Slavic scholar Vatroslav Jagić, with whom he collaborated at the Old Slavonic Academy in Krk, composed a Glagolitic inscription that was placed on the chapel.
